I happened upon this after reading through David Chapman’s hypertext book “Meaningness” and checking out his other blog posts where he talks about tantra. You will discover that tantra is more about seeing yourself as a God and about having the ability to transcend into a better place in the death.
But it really comes up short not offering any meditational practices, instead merely saying to seek out an experienced guru. We have to know that the attainment of enlightenment completion, buddhahood, totality, or whatever we want to call it is not only a theoretical possibility but something that people like us can and do actually achieve.
But it’s clear from reading this lucid, well-argued approach to getting started on escaping samsara that the fast lane is still a long, slow struggle with desire, meditation, and turning your attention to the world to help others and away from the world to get some clarity for yourself. Tantra is about taking the energy of everyday desires, channeling it through our ‘fundamentally pure minds,’ and walking ‘the middle way’ of life through ‘experience and not blind faith.
The whole reason for having your consciousness manifest as a divine light-being with one thousand arms is so that you can lend a hand to one thousand suffering beings.
Take the practice of thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara, for example. This is the same trick that has worked on so many people for so many cults and religions for centuries. Those sorts of statements intgoduction just like every other religion and cult. Might just turn you inside-out, in a lovely way. Would not recommend unless you have to read it for a class or something. A genuine generation of Boddhicitta is attained only when, through the training of yese mind, the aspiration to attain full enlightenment becomes spontaneous and no longer requires any deliberate exertion. Of course, the buddhist concept of desire is that it leads to attachment towards objects, or people, or the self.
Very useful and inspiring. A really good introduction to what to aim for and expect out of tantra.

I say ‘bad news’ because tantra is supposed to be the Buddhist ‘fast lane’ laama enlightenment. I definitely feel that I now have a better understanding of Tibetan Buddhism, and have picked up a few useful concepts and a really general patchy outline of what’s going on in tantric practices, but really would have preferred a deeper text, in fact the whole second half of the book just seemed a bit rushed.
Overall, this book just rubs me the wrong way.

It’s a book about the mind by someone who is clearly not up to date on all the new knowledge we’ve gained on how the brain actually works. I really enjoyed reading about tantric meditation. By allowing yourself to believe that some profound religious experience is going to occur and surrounding yourself with people who expect you to have that experience, what choice does a biased human brain have but to convince itself that the experience has occurred?
