Winter Warriors (The Drenai Saga, #8) by David Gemmell
Winter Warriors was the first book of his that I read when I was younger and sparked my interest in fantasy books. Their purpose is clear, as is the prophesy: There are prophecies, evil wizards, treacherous demons, a city befouled, and lots of protagonists to follow.
However, there were so many characters flying in and out of the pages at times, that it got a little difficult to keep track of who is who – especially when you’ve got characters with names like Banelion and Bakilas, and you can’t remember which one is good and which one is bad and why.
The plot is somewhat unoriginal, however Gemmell is a masterful author and ensures the characters are well defined for some have appeared in a previous Drenai tale and the relationships between them are fraught with tension and honour.
Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Meanwhile, the Drenai have recently conquered Ventria and King Skanda has solidified his position by marrying Axianathe daughter of the late emperor. If I take one thing away from this book, it is that little glimmer of hope to be a better man. Although I always find it hard to choose a favorite when it comes to david gemmell. Alas, as this is the eigh Winter is coming.
